Rob Mooney: Pioneering Transportation Safety for Secure Journeys

To be the Director of Transportation for a company that covers the Northeast and portions of Central Kansas, you have to learn to take control of what you can and roll with the flow for the rest. Rob Mooney is the perfect man for this job.

Rob Mooney, Midland Care Director of Transportation

Mooney oversees the daily operations of the Midland Care transportation department. In doing that, he manages a team of over 40 highly skilled and professional members.

His colleagues describe him as honest, dependable, trustworthy, and understanding.

Jessica Schell, Director of Admin Support, is in awe of his ability to remain flexible, especially amid numerous changes.

“Rob is an excellent manager to his staff. His experience in the Transportation field before taking on an administrative role has been incredibly helpful in making him an effective manager. He understands the struggles of transporting our elders so that he can relate to his staff better. The Transportation staff really appreciate his willingness to support and fight for them when needed. His weekly newsletters to his staff include important reminders, and his mantra is “Safety over schedule, always!” Rob is just a great person overall,” said Schell. “His faith in Jesus drives him to be abundantly caring when dealing with staff or participants directly, flexible when chaos happens (and it happens every hour in Transportation!), and keep calm and focused when serious issues and complications arise. Rob is an invaluable asset to Midland Care.”

Mooney loves making a positive impact on those we serve.

“I appreciate the staff at Midland and what everyone does day in and day out to help our participants enjoy a higher quality of life that they might not have elsewhere. It’s amazing to see so many staff buy into what we do here at Midland and take ownership of it. It really shows,” he said. “Even though I don’t interact with too many participants, I’m able to go home every day knowing that through our efforts, we were able to help people, whether transporting them safely or working on their behalf to make sure that they’re well taken care of. They may not know or even appreciate the work we do each day, but I do, and that gives me great satisfaction.”

“I tell my office team that there are no problems,
only opportunities to improve ourselves and our processes.”

Working for Midland has also made him a better person.

“Working with the older population has made me realize that even though I may have some aches and pains from time to time, it’s nothing compared to what some of our participants go through on a daily basis. It makes me appreciate my health and my family’s health that much more. Just knowing that we’re making a difference in their lives is very satisfying,” he said. “Working at Midland has really helped me to become more of a compassionate person.”

He seeks out reasons to improve. Every problem is an opportunity to learn and do better.

“I tell my office team that there are no problems, only opportunities to improve ourselves and our processes. The transportation team we’ve built at Midland is second to none,” he said. “We have compassionate team members who want to do a good job for our participants. Our transportation team has truly bought into what we’re doing at Midland, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Mooney was born in Olathe but grew up in Wichita, where he graduated from Wichita Heights High School.

Before working for Midland Care, Mooney spent a decade at Brandon Woods at Alvamar Retirement Community. He served as the Activity Director, overseeing the activities program in five neighborhoods. He had started in transportation, but by the time he left to work for Midland, he oversaw transportation in addition to his Activity Director duties.

He also worked part-time as a bus driver for First Transit in Lawrence, working with the SafeRide program for the University of Kansas. He also taught middle school at a Christian school in Lawrence for four years, serving as the PE teacher for the entire school and the boys’ High School Basketball Coach.

He started in the printing industry and worked for seventeen years at Emporia State University and the University of Kansas.

Mooney graduated with a Bachelor’s in Secondary Education from Heritage Baptist College. In addition, he graduated with an Associate of Applied Science Degree from Butler County Community College. He also has a Graphic Arts certification from Flint Hills Technical School.

Outside of work, he keeps busy.

“I enjoy spending time with my wife, six kids, who aren’t really kids anymore, and three grandsons. I enjoy watching my grandkids play football and basketball,” he said. “I also enjoy cycling, particularly mountain biking, and I’m always looking for new trails to ride. My favorite place to mountain bike is Bentonville, AR. This next summer, I plan on riding my mountain bike down Pike’s Peak.”

Spending time with his family brings him joy in life.

“Now that my kids are grown and almost all moved out, I really appreciate the times I get to spend with them,” he said. “I try not to take little things for granted because time passes so quickly.”

Mooney admits to having a quirky sense of humor, which the office staff can attest to.

“I feel easygoing, and it takes a lot to upset me. I like to laugh, but I really like to make others laugh. I enjoy cutting through the day’s stress with a funny comment here and there to make people relax,” he said. “I enjoy meeting new people and feel like I can talk to anyone. I tend to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.”

As a Lawrence resident for the last 22 years, he is a Jayhawk through and through. He follows the Royals, the Chiefs, and the Dallas Cowboys. He is a huge fan of college football and basketball.
